Five Days: an adventure (A Fantasy Adventure) Page 12
‘Thanks, Anna.’
She went out of sight, leaving them alone.
‘Er – sit,’ he said what came first in his mind.
‘She told me how you rescued everyone …’
‘Oh, that was nothing.’
‘You are blushing?’
‘No – no,’ he said quickly. ‘It’s – um – nothing.’
She walked to the window behind Anna’s bed and gazed out at the beautiful Sana. Derek followed awkwardly.
‘It’s beautiful, isn’t it?’ she said in a whisper like a tone.
‘Hmmm, very beautiful.’
‘You’ll go back, won’t you?’
‘Probably.’
She took a deep breath. ‘You know, this beauty – the allure of time never dies. I’ll be old, you’ll be old, but time will find some new souls – it’ll nurture them, guide them and help them.’
‘True,’ said Derek, grinning.
‘I was so scared when you didn’t wake up … I thought – um’ – she turned to face him, only him. ‘You made me realise – hmm – love could do anything.’
Derek could see her face coming close, what should he do … for a second, he thought he should scream but that wouldn’t be a very good idea.
‘Oh my god … oh my god …’
And their lips met, it was as though the universe had gone slow and delighted. Nothing was wrong, all was more than good. He was saved from death, he learned to love and best of all, he was living his life not spending it.
Clattering of footsteps and –
‘Oh my god!’ screamed Anna. ‘Oh sorry – er – I will just go back.’
She hurried away.
Derek never knew how he had dared to appear before his parents after five complete days and how he convinced them about a world, where hills hovered in the air.
Mrs Frank was so angry that she was barely speaking anything and all the way through, Derek felt as though she would be exploding like a volcano anytime now and then, but – to his relief – she didn’t; Mr Frank looked slightly convinced but Derek couldn’t say he didn’t have any thought of calling a Psychiatrist.
But when he escorted them to Sana, they reacted exactly as he’d anticipated –
‘No this can’t be true!’ said Mrs Frank. ‘This cannot be true!’
‘Holy—’
But Derek ceased his arm and didn’t let him complete his word.
Then he introduced Alicia, and when he was juggling words like “girl” and “friend” Mrs Frank cut in and asked Derek in a low voice so that Alicia wouldn’t hear. ‘Why don’t you propose her?’
And he felt as though there was only one day to Christmas.
They spent their night in Sana after a feast. They were also fortunate to attend the coronation of Alicia, which couldn’t have been better than that.
And after three years of dating – in which Derek was appointed the Prime Minister of Sana and he did work well – Derek finally asked Alicia to marry him and it wouldn’t need a super-mind to know what she said.
EPILOGUE
Ten Years Later
Sun was blazing high in the air but it was rather curious to notice that it wasn’t hot at all in Sana. It was as though spring never wanted to leave its gardens, no matter whatever the month was.
It was 5th of August on Derek’s calendar, the same day when a princess had saved his life after he saved hers and they were now, as Anna said, a happy couple which had a handsome son called Dean.
She usually spent her time in the human world alone – she hadn’t married anyone or more precisely, she didn’t find anyone who could tolerate her super-dangerous pet collection.
She never hesitated to go and meet Alicia and Derek, who now lived permanently there with his parents.
Mr and Mrs Frank were now people who usually spent their time alone, meditating in absolute peace. But they never missed any opportunity of visiting their son on festivals, which were never rare in Sana.
And 5th August was a popular date on the festival calendar as the princess of Sana was rescued on the very same date.
The city was so alluringly decorated that one could find it more addicting than any drug ever existed – every block wore enormous laces along the streets, fire torches blazed bright blue instead of orange; people wearing their best outfits were wandering on the major road to keep looking at, what they called, the goddess of beauty disguised as a castle.
And they were probably right, too, as the sand coloured rock stones were shining brightly in the showers of sunlight. Beautiful grassy grounds stretching to infinity were looking more powerful than a magnet. Even Daniel (who lied to his wife, his colleague) who never admired the beauty of nature yelled ‘Spectacular!’
But in the hall of the castle which had only two royals – Derek and Dean – had patches of sunlight coming from open windows and was silent until …
‘Daddy,’ said Dean holding his father’s hand and taking small steps. ‘Where is mother?’
‘She will join us,’ said Derek, grinning.
‘But why can’t she come with us?’
‘She is a queen, she has responsibilities toward her people …’
‘She will do magic?’ asked an enthusiastic Dean, who had almost jumped to his feet.
‘Yes, obviously, you doubt that?’
‘No. Daddy, can you do magic?’
‘Of course, why else you think your mother married me,’ he said turning left into a corridor.
‘Show me.’
‘Um – let’s see – you want to go back in time?’
Dean nodded vigorously.
‘Close your eyes then.’
He did and then, heard a snap.
‘What is it? What is it?’ he said, opening his eyes.
‘You,’ said Derek passing him his phone, which had his fresh picture on the screen.
‘Whoa! It’s really me! How did you do it?’
‘Will teach you afterwards,’ – they walked into the open grounds, some guards hurried to their side – ‘oh see, you recognise that?’
They were looking at the beautiful Sana, the houses were as small as a toy and not too many moments could be seen from there but Derek knew it was the best place to see the upcoming thing.
‘You see I have shrunk the houses, I am a great magician.’
‘I am not a kid anymore, it’s because we’re standing far away from them.’
Derek laughed heartily.
‘Where is she?’ said Dean after a minute.
Derek saw the centre of the city, shining brightly as a moon had suddenly appeared there and he said. ‘There …’
And something like a dazzling rocket shot out of there and hovered overhead, clouds appeared in the sky – not dark and sad, but strangely white and cheerful – snowfall started and the city exploded in cheers.
The rocket stopped hovering and a lady appeared out – the same Derek saw in the cart, ten years ago. Her hair was swimming in the air and her eyes shining brightly.
You’re looking beautiful.
‘There she is!’ yelled Dean.
‘Yep, there she is – let’s go to the city, the ball must have started by now. She will join us there.’
And off they went – when Derek reached the main street, hundreds of couples were already dancing beautifully: Anna beamed at him, the two chimpanzees shook their hands in air and Muriel (who came to them for a temporary visit) dancing with Uncle Bernard.
And in between, close to a fountain, he found Alicia grinning at him. Just as he looked at her, he knew death had given him a new life.
